In the Beginning
Mission Penguin began life as a simple blog with an amazingly awesome name (courtesy of my wife). Despite the amazing name, the blog was only ever mediocre at best. A lack of time limited the content, and things that were posted generally lacked focus. Eventually the site stopped evolving and drifted into an unacceptable state.
That's not to say that I didn't like the content on the old site. I definitely did, especially some of the visitor contributions. There was even some positive feedback. I just think that a lack of direction kind of doomed it from the start.
World Domination - A Primer
Since the lack of a proper direction for the site was a primary reason for its stagnation, we had best define it early on;
Mission Penguin should serve as a public forum open to all regardless of creed, nationality, religion, sexual orientation, etc... blah blah freedom/democracy/hacker manifesto. The site intends to grow with its users embracing their desires, encouraging self expression, and improving the world through the free flow of information and ideas.
In practical terms it means that I envision this site as both a community blog and mashup. I intend to utilize integrate this site with others to provide a seamless application. An example can already be seen on the blog pages with Last.FM integration. The users are fully expected to provide content and gradually everyone's efforts will improve the site for all.
The Future is Full of Penguins!
It should be ovious at this point that the future is for penguins.
Yes, you did peg it. There is definitely an open source/Linux tilt to the site. I am a technophile at heart after all, and increasingly have learned to "Love the Penguin". Now it's just a matter of convincing the rest of you...
What about the Content?
If the site has an open source bias what kinds of content do you expect users to provide? Despite the open source leanings, I have no opposition to content on virtually any subject. Granted I am more partial to "nerdy" subjects. However, I have no qualms with reality. If you want to demonstrate in what ways open source fails. By all means! Criticism can only help improve our favorite mascott!
The philosophies which have enabled the Internet, Democracy, the Scientific Method, etc... should be emodied on this site. The content you create is owned by you. I hope to have a means in place to let you dynamically select a posting license as well so there is more control over what can be done with your postings.
I'll probably edit this later to make it more concise. This is basically a free verse about page as it stands. In the meantime if anyone wants to help feel free to let me know!
