Let's put Grandma on Linux

I never thought I'd utter those words, but I'll be throwing Ubuntu on a machine intended for Grandma in the next week or so.Not my grandma, but a Grandma nonetheless.  I'll throw a brief article up describing the hardware, previous OS, motivations to upgrade, and her learning curve.I won't spend too much time on this because there are so many similar articles out on the web, folks converting friends, family, etc. to the Ubuntu distribution.

If we're lucky Mr. Krondor might grace us all with one of his many similar stories. :-)

Who... Me?

Krondor doesn't have much of a story... Other than I hated Vista on my new laptop, I contacted my personal IT dept/Krondor, he gave me Ubuntu, and I have been open source ever since. He was quite happy when I hated Vista enough that I actually asked him to throw Linux on my laptop. Although, I think it also saddened him a bit too, because I swear he got some kind of sick joy out of repeatedly threatening to format my computer...

I am just hoping that the online class I have to take this winter won't throw a wrench in the system. We will see if Oakland University's virtual classes are compatible. I will report back... Maybe I will get all angry and progressive and instead of dual booting into Windows, I will protest the IT department at OU... I will keep you posted. ;)

I have a ton of stories!

Lest you forget my sister's insane ability to destroy any computer other then one running Linux. In fact it ran so well she had her boyfriend format it so she could break Windows again and then ask me to fix it.

Fortunately I refused to end the horrible cycle of pain. As for OU and Linux if they don't let me know because I got contacts ;)

IE on Ubuntu? No problem

Yes yes, I know, IE is the devil, but if you just have to have it because some website insists that they will only work on IE, you should get Krondor to install IEs4Linux.

It's way easier than getting IE to work in WINE by hand.  I'm sure he's very familiar with it already, but if not, get instructions here.

Heck, do it on your own and really impress him ;-)
